José Luis Aguilar Sánchez was born on April 24, 1940 — the youngest of 11 children raised by a widowed mother with no formal education, in a neighborhood where poverty was the rule and ambition was the exception. He received his first pair of shoes in second grade, bought for him by a teacher who took notice.

He began working at age 10. He was the only one of his siblings to attend university, studying Textile Engineering — a field he chose because he already worked the factory floor and wanted to understand it at a deeper level. He never stopped working a single day of his adult life.

Father Arnulfo Arredondo ran a youth program that gave structure and purpose to boys in José Luis’s neighborhood. The friendship they formed lasted the rest of Padre Arredondo’s life. That mentorship shaped the man who would later refuse to give up on himself — and then refuse to give up on others.

At 14, he met Guadalupe through church. They have been together ever since — 61 years of marriage, three sons, and a business neither of them planned to build.

In his early 30s, what started as dandruff began to spread. Patches appeared on his scalp. He stopped going to the barber because people recoiled from him — so he started cutting his own hair. He tried treatment after treatment, some helping briefly, none lasting, all expensive.

By the time lesions covered more than 90% of his body, he had stopped working entirely. Guadalupe became the family’s breadwinner. He describes this period with the quiet restraint of a man who has made peace with something that once nearly broke him.
